If you’re thinking of scheduling your first visit to our practice, you might not know how to get to it yet, so let’s give you a few key starting points to choose from. If you’re coming to us from the direction of the Whitefish Community Library, you’ll be driving down to Kalispell. Get on US 93 going south and keep going for ten miles. After that, it’s very easy. At the Ford dealership, turn left onto Rose Crossing, then right onto Whitefish Stage Rd. Keep going past Edgerton Elementary School, then turn left into the Village Loop and keep an eye out for our practice coming up along the bend on your left.
A Little Whitefish History
Whitefish, Montana, boasts a rich history dating back long before European settlers arrived. Native American tribes, including the Kootenai, Pend d’Oreilles, and Bitterroot Salish, inhabited the area for over 14,000 years, traversing the mountainous terrain west of the Continental Divide for hunting and other activities. It wasn’t until 1883 that John Morton, the first permanent settler, constructed a cabin near Whitefish Lake, laying the foundation for the town’s development.
Joined by pioneers from the logging industry in the early 1890s, such as the Baker and Hutchinson brothers, Whitefish saw significant growth, fueled by logging crews utilizing the Whitefish River to transport logs downstream to Kalispell. The arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1904, rerouting to bypass Haskell Pass, further spurred development, leading to the town’s incorporation in 1905. Initially known as Stumptown due to the extensive timber clearing required, Whitefish flourished as a railroad and logging hub.
Over time, it evolved into a vibrant community, attracting visitors and residents with its unique heritage and scenic beauty. Today, Whitefish stands as a testament to its pioneering spirit, with landmarks like the historic Whitefish Depot and the bustling ski resort on Big Mountain preserving its storied past for future generations to appreciate.
